so the original plan was for lori and i to spend the week in roanoke helping mom and dad pack and get settled into their new house, and to have beth and james join us all for a celebration party on friday night.  well, if you know any of us you know this – things never go according to plan.  however, i have also learned this – in the end – no matter how difficult the struggle was, we will come out better on the other side.

mom and dad got a really great deal on the home of their dreams.  they put in the offer while will and i were in the bahamas.  according to the first contract (prior to amendments) they were going to close on october 5th.  however, they found out shortly after the offer was accepted that the fella who currently owns the home filed for bankruptcy.  since the home had a contract, the bankruptcy judge allowed the sale to go through, but because some corrections needed to be made to the home prior to closing the house was now tied up with the seller’s court hearings.  this pushed closing back to the 9th.  however, with court on the 8th, we found out that the fella had an undisclosed lien on the property that had to be rectified at next month’s bankruptcy hearing, thus pushing the closing back at least another 30 days… we are now looking at thanksgiving.

mom and dad are resilient and bounce back like nobody’s business, but this was just a little much.  sometimes timing is everything, and this was just bad timing.  mom gets really busy with the store around the holidays and knows that moving during the holidays is just not ideal.  however, that being said – we reassured her that if we have to unpack boxes and decorate the tree on christmas, this is what we will do.  afterall, we are all taylors (deep down), and we will get it done!  so – in true taylor fashion we spent the week rolling with the punches.  lori and i ran a billion errands for mom and dad and helped them get lots of furniture ordered for their new place.  lori and i both felt like we had a new friend (Scott) at Grand Piano.  I am sure he would run the other way if he saw us come through the doors ever again!  we visited the store three days in a row at the first of the week, and were so happy when the final purchase was made!  everyone is really happy with the furniture picks and we know it is all going to look great in the new place!  we also helped mom get fabric picked out for her wingback chairs in the sitting room.  this was a task, since the fabric had to blend with an antique oriental rug and also pair nicely with their new open concept floorplan – however, we figured it all out and got the fabric ordered and ready to go!  sadness set in with lori and i when the reality of the packing actually set in.  we went through old memories in our dresser drawers and boxed up old trinkets, trying to clear out our rooms.  both of us knew this was the last time that we would be together staying in this house, our childhood home, with our parents.

the three sisters are so grateful to have had such wonderful childhoods filled with tons of memories based in our home at 51 Lois Lane (formerly known as Rural Route 3 BOX 150, and 4061 Lois Lane).  we compiled a sampling of those memories into a book we entitled “51 memories on 51 lois lane” as a coffee table book for mom and dad in their new house.  we really could never completely compile a complete list of fond memories of our childhoods because, as we grow older, we become evermore aware of the fact that nobody had as good of a childhood as we had.  we have, without a doubt, the world’s best parents. (which is why the bad news of the delayed closing was hurtful for all of us, just knowing how excited they were to get into the new place.)

our basket of goodies that was intended to be opened at the new home celebration ended up being opened in the living room at 51 lois lane.  we threw in an extra present of the sugarland cd so that mom and dad could find comfort in knowing that “..it happens”!  we all danced and sang rounds of the song knowing that sometimes the reality of the situation is just a little too much when you have to chime in with:

“Now it is poor me, why me, oh me
Boring the same old worn out blah blah story
There is no good explanation for it at all

Ain’t no rhyme or reason
No complicated meaning
Ain’t no need to over think it
Let go laughing
Life don’t go quite like you planned it
We try so hard to understand it
Irrefutable, indisputable
The fact is –
It happens”

however we can all take comfort in knowing, when the time is right and GOD is ready for them to close on the house and move in, they will and we will all be right there on their doorstep.

love ya mom and dad.

sunday was my 32nd birthday – not that i am bragging because i certainly do not want to be or feel like i am, 32 years old.  husband and i often ask each other, do you feel like a grown up?  fortunately, or unfortunately as you may see it – our answer is always no.

after 32 birthdays i find myself sort of an expert at celebrating one’s life.  i think i have figured out how to do it right.  here are the rules:

1.  do not deny yourself anything you want for your birthday (as long as it harms nobody else)

2. if your birthday falls on a weekend, it is – by right – your birthday weekend and you should take full advantage of it

3.  get silly, get funny, get happy – do not ever get sad or tearful on your birthday.  there are 364 other days every year for that drama.

so here is what happened, the play by play, if you will.

friday night was the start of the “birthday weekend extravaganza”!  we went down town to wake forest for the friday night art open house.  we toured open studios, stores, and visited the wine shop.  we got to sample some amazing wines from westbend vineyards.  they are located west of winston salem, and are a nc winery we had not yet tried.  we liked everything they had to offer and ended up buying a bottle of their cabernet franc for later.   down town was a buzz.  they had hundreds of people crowded out in the street waiting for a band outside the coffee shop.  they had live music on the porch at one of the galleries, and people were all over enjoying the wine, art, and weather.  after we had all the fun we could have down town, husband asked me where i wanted to go for dinner and i just blurted out waraji, without thinking twice!  usually it takes us about an hour to decide where we are going to eat.  i must examine all coupons in my coupon binder, check my coupon email account, and verify any specials before presenting him with a list of options to choose from before we can agree on a bargain priced dinner.  waraji is not convenient, they never have a coupon, and it was already late  – off we went.

waraji was surprisingly not busy for a friday night and we were promptly seated when we arrived.  the hostess seated us in a different section of the small dining room than we have ever been seated in before.  we were seated next to a group of three guys in their mid twenties to early thirties.  (this will be important later.)  the server quickly came over and greeted us with warm moist towels to wipe our hands.  she returned and suggested some of their new organic sakes.  i have never really liked sake until we tried a sampler in the bahamas, so i thought while i am doing things for fun this weekend i would try another type.  she made a suggestion and i went with it.  i got a cold sake and husband got a hot sake.  we compared the two and enjoyed both of them, even though they had very different flavors.  we had steamed mussels for an appetizer and were glad we did not order the tempura (i thought i wanted) when our giant platter of sushi came out.  we ordered 5 different specialty rolls.  we always order “scarry jerry” rolls when we come to waraji, but also ordered some new finds this time.  this time we got brave and ordered scarry jerry on a heat scale of 9/10!  it did not disappoint!  we really liked everything we got, except we both agreed that abalone was not our favorite item, and husband declared it “disgusting”.  after we finished our dinners we were entertained by the fellas at the table next door who were attempting to choke down a set of three scallop shooters.  one of the fellas had never had such a shooter before and as they yelled “KAMPAI” and he tossed it back about half of it came back out!  we found out the shooters were composed of sake, two scallops, a raw quail egg, and spicy sauce.  spit it out, good plan!  after dinner we always like to “pack around” so we headed to the teeter to get some items for breakfast the next morning.  while there i found an unbelievable sale on some wine totes, bottle openers, and wine pourers.  after saving $49 with my VIC card, we were on our way!

saturday morning i had to wake up early to be down town for my hair appointment.  before i went to the salon (in keeping with the – do not deny yourself of anything theme) i had to go get my favorite dirty chai latte to enjoy during my salon visit.   i was missing my stylist who disappeared from the salon i was going to and ended up finding her at another salon down the street.  thanks to a poster hanging in the window of the new salon i was able to locate her and set up the appointment.  after i sat down in the chair on saturday morning we began to talk.  she told me that the other owner of the last salon had fired her for some false claims of negative reviews on the internet.  i told her that sounded so odd since i had given her a 5 star review on yelp when she cut my hair the last time.  she looked at me kind of shocked, and was like “oh my gosh, i think i just emailed you last night!”  she said that she found my review on yelp and sent me an email to tell me that she had moved to the new salon.  how bizarre.  we laughed about the whole thing and i told her i would give her a new 5 star review at the new salon so other people would be able to find her too.  (love her!)  husband was supposed to be on his way to run some b-day errands which included picking up a cake and some surprises while i was out at the hairdoodie place.  when i returned home and saw him trucking along on his jd in the lawn i thought something was amiss.  he came in after he was done cutting the grass and informed me that his car would not start.  (bless his heart, he just got the car back from the shop after we got back from the bahamas and now the battery would not start.)  we devised a plan that he could use my car to go run his errands if he dropped me off at the nail salon so i could relax with a pedicure.  the plan worked perfectly and i vegged out with a pedicure and walked next door and bought myself a new dress to wear to dinner that night, while i waited for him to make his way back up town.  after he picked me up we headed down town to the italian festival.  again, town was a buzz with stuff going on everywhere you looked!  we had lots of fun and ended up getting some delicious gelatto from ala mode.  after the italy festival we ended up striking out for some antique stores.  i love going antiquing and hardly ever find time for it, so it was a great addition to the no holds barred weekend!  we went to suzanne’s antiques and revival antiques.  i walked away with some great photos from suzanne’s, but no actual physical treasures.  after the hunt we ended up going back home to get ready for our fancy pants surprise dinner!

not until we reached the restaurant was husband ready to divulge where we were going.  we both got dressed up and headed to durham.  we finally arrived and there we were at “magnolia”, in all its glory.  i had been dying to go here ever since we moved to nc, hearing that it was rated as one of the top twenty five restaurants in the us, and the fact that they have won a james beard award.  we arrived and went inside and were promptly seated by the host in the perfect little table for two.  the waiter quickly came over and offered to get us some cocktails.  i asked for a recommendation, like i do anytime i go some place fancy, and i use this as a gauge to see how the rest of the night is going to play out.  he gave us really good recommendations and had completely memorized every item on the extensively detailed menu and was able to set us up for home runs at every turn.  here is what we ended up with:

sparkling gemlet – my cocktail – sweet and bitter at the same time, sort of like a twisted ginger ale!

bitter elder – husband’s cocktail – grapefruity sour with a hint of sweetness!

pan seared foie gras in a fig coulis – my appetizer – the BEST, hands down, foie gras dish i have ever consumed.  previous to this dish the winner was at bin 54.  this dish at magnolia was perfectly prepared and amazing when accompanied with the pickled watermelon – unreal!

twice baked grits souffle – husband’s appetizer – this was a house specialty, so we had to try it.  it was like grits on air!  the grits paired with the herbed sauce and mushrooms were perfect.  husband loved every single bite!

herb grilled swordfish in brown butter – my entree – this dish was recommended by the waiter.  he was right, that this was a show stopper!  the swordfish was perfectly grilled and accompanied by a brown butter sauce and served with pickled sultanas (large caper berries), arugula, and beans – it was really delicious!

grilled new york strip in port wine reduction – husband’s entree – the steak was fork tender and perfectly cooked med rare, no other seasoning was needed and every bite was delish!  the steak came with a grilled salad – which was really wonderful.  the sauce that it came with was scrumptious!

brown sugar bacon waffles with peaches and sorghum ice cream – my dessert – what can i say?  people, if you have never had bacon in a dessert, or bacon with chocolate – put it on your to do list.

hot chocolate chile cake with mexican chile ice cream – husband’s dessert – again, spicy chocolate is like bacon with dessert, if you have never gone there- you really should.

pinot noir- french – bottle of wine – 2005 – auxey-duresses 1er cru – climate du val – light and fruity pinot noir that paired splendidly with both steak and fish!

everything from the service to the art, and especially the food was amazing!  we are foodies, no doubt about it and we really enjoyed this gastronomic experience!  it was worth the wait and the $.  delicious!

after dinner we wormed our way back to wake forest and decided we had better take the doggies out for a midnight stroll, since they’d been caged up all day.  we kept on our fancy clothes and walked them around the block.  it was fun to enjoy the stars and the solitude of nobody else on the road to make our doggies bark.  everyone had a great night.

with a late saturday night and no rest for the weary we missed the church boat and slept in.  it was time for pressies!  husband got me all set up in the chair to be the daily photographer!  he snapped photos of me opening all of the great cards and gifts!  we got showered and decided to head to parker & otis for brunch.  they serve breakfast all day and had some pancakes that were calling my name.  we headed back to durham and enjoyed the car ride with the sun roof open and the sun shine pouring in, definitely a perfect day to be 32!  we arrived at the restaurant and made our way to the cashier to place our order.  (this place is like cracker barrel gone chic-mod.)  i ordered banana blueberry pancakes and a side of eggs with an orangina to drink.  husband ordered eggs, bacon, and a cheddar biscuit with orangina and lemon perrier.  we headed to the back deck to find an empty seat.  we sat under the awning with the ceiling fans just admiring the weather and talking about all the fun we’d had this weekend.  a train roared past us and everyone stopped their chatting to watch it hurry down the tracks.  breakfast was served shortly thereafter.  everything was even better than we could have imagined and we enjoyed every last bite!  after eating we headed back inside to check out the store.  they have an amazing store filled with everything you could imagine from bacon mints, meyer’s cleaning products, barefoot contessa cookbooks, quality olive oils, a large wine department, to a coffee bar!  a good find, for sure!  we scooped up a couple of purchases and headed to some other stores in durham.  i picked up a few cute things (that i could not resist) and we headed back across town.  once we got home i again got the notion that the doggies should go on a walk.  we headed down to the pond with the dogs and were surprised when iliana just full forced lunged into the pond!  WHOA!  she has never gotten near the water, no matter how many times i have tried to entice her!  then amelia followed suit, and before we knew it both of them were dragging and rolling around like pigs in the mud and completely tarred and feathered with goose feathers!  they were having a blast so we could not even get upset, but the clean up was definitely not fun!  after the doggie bath time i had to catch up with many phone messages where people were trying to locate the missing b-day girl!  i followed up on my phone calls and rested for a bit and we headed out for thai food for dinner.  i definitely think if i had to pick a type of food to be my favorite, thai would be the one.  the spicy sweet and sour combos are the best!  after dinner we headed home so i could catch the finale of design star and enjoy some birthday cake!  husband picked out a mocha chocolate cake with pink candles!  he sang me a glorious happy birthday song and carved up the dessert!  we loved every bite of it (though we were full to the brim after all the food we’d eaten this weekend!)  we stayed up until 12:01 and i can definitely say that i enjoyed every minute of my special day!

we just returned from a spoiled rotten week in the bahamas.  we’ve got gorgeous tans and wonderful memories of an amazing week to prove it.

we left raleigh last saturday for grand bahama island.  we arrived on the island a little after 12 noon and headed for our hotel.  our taxi driver was a talker and recommended some restaurants and things to see while on the island.  he dropped us off at our resort and we scurried in hoping for an early check-in.  however, the hotel had their procedures down to a science and quickly quashed our hopes of getting into swimsuits just yet.  they stored our luggage and gave us some sales pitches for activities and tours that we quickly vetoed.  we headed for the sea-side restaurant.  the beach was crystal clear and amazingly gorgeous.  we tried some local fare and headed for the seaside lounge chairs while we waited for our room to be ready.

when 4pm rolled around we were at the desk with room keys in hand and heading for our room.  we got in and did a quick change so we could run back out to the beach.  by then the sands had cleared and most people were preparing for dinner, so we had the beach to ourselves.  we laid out for hours just talking and listening to the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore.  later that evening we headed (by ferry boat) across the marina to port lucaya, where all of the restaurants were located.  we saw a huge crowd outside of agave (latin fusion) and decided the margaritas were too refreshing to pass up.  we opted for a table on the patio and settled in for some amazing drinks and dinner.  everything was delicious!  after dinner we ferried back to the resort and almost fell asleep on the walk back to the room.  the 4am wake up time that morning was finally kicking in.

the next day we woke and headed straight for the ocean – we suited up and spent time at the pool and in the ocean with the gorgeous weather.  the week flew by with more days of the same – relaxing, enjoying pina coladas & bahama mamas, swimming, and catching some sun.  we tried out many amazing restaurants and had our anniversary dinner at china beach overlooking the ocean.  all of the food was amazing, but our favorite experience was the conch salad and fried conch at billy joe’s conch stand on the beach.  everything is freshly prepared right on the spot and the view is unforgettable!

we tried to get on a sunset catamaran sailing trip one night, but due to the weather (and we suppose the lack of interest) they were not running any of these outings without the snorkeling involved.  friday will talked me into para-sailing.  i was nervous at first, but once he convinced me to go i was set.  we went to a little blue hut on the beach and a fella told us to sign our names and fork out the cash and someone would be over to pick us up soon.  we waited for a few moments, were given life vests, and then were picked up by three fellas in a little boat.  they quickly drove us out to a make shift boat dock in the middle of the ocean.  they explained to us how to prepare for the take off and landing and then hooked us up to a harness and before we knew it our feet were running off the dock and we were in the air.  the view was unbelievable.  you could see the entire island from up there.  while flying around we noticed tons of sting rays swimming in the water, as well as one HUGE turtle.  i told the fella when we landed that it must have been 500 pounds, and he agreed that there were some huge ones out there!  the driver of the boat took us up and then went around in a large circle in the water, as we got out to the furthest point he let the rope lag and we fell down dipping our toes in the water – then he was off again and did the same thing when we got closest to the shore – it definitely added to the excitement!  i was so glad i let will talk me into it, and will definitely try it again soon!

there were some odd characters everywhere you went.  if people were not trying to braid your hair they were trying to trick you into accepting a free lunch to sell you a time share.  one day while in the pool we were greeted by the “magic man”.  he walked up to the edge of the pool and proclaimed he was the “magic man”!  i chuckled and kept swimming.  he said no, seriously, i for real – am the “magic man”!  again, i chuckled, and will and i just looked at each other.  then the “magic man” said – no bull shit man – i serious, i got the shrooms, ya know whatever ya need for the magic!  we were so thankful we were surrounded by thousands of gallons of water and just laughed so he went on his way.  the next day we found ourselves in another pool by the ocean and were greeted by a fella with a silver starfish on his head trying to sell tourists fresh starfish – how he thought we’d get those back through customs i have no idea…  we also noticed that this was a very popular tourist destination for the parisians, and they have very different swimsuit preferences.  we saw many thongs – even on 12 year old twin girls, as well as quite a few speedos on their male counterparts.  very interesting indeed.

will and i dodged hurricane anna and bill – (how fitting?) – while we were on the island and had a much needed week of restful relaxation.  we enjoyed our many trips to the swim-up bars, lazily laying in the sun, toes in the sand, and just being with each other.  we can’t wait to do something as wonderful next year around this time!

enjoy the photos!

i am in love with pictures and photography, so for me – a new camera is the ultimate.  i have been craving a canon g10 for the past few months.  this camera is the ultimate digi cam with 14.7 mega pixels, a full 28mm lens, a 5X optical zoom, and a kabillion other features.  i recently convinced husband that it would be a great idea to have this camera for our upcoming trip to the bahamas.  he agreed we could go look at the cameras this past weekend, and so we did.

we first went to best buy, and the associate there could offer nothing more than reading the placard in front of the demo model.  we left.  then we went to ritz camera.  here the guy seemed to know something about cameras, and even said he had a g10, but knew nothing about the ad on lens and said this would be an awful camera for pictures of doggies.  i was irritated with his lack of understanding, and so we left and went home to do more research.

i showed husband all of the information i had previously found online, and he agreed it really sounded like a great camera.  we found a good deal with a coupon and were able to get the camera on sunday night.  below are the photos of my first couple days of trying it out.  i am still only using the auto mode, as i really need to get back into the swing of things on the manual capacity, but those are for later.

july was dreadfully, awfully, terribly long.

will worked long hours at work for yet.  the non-passing of a state budget is making his life hell at work.  the 4th of july holiday brought great drama and little relaxation.  working on international projects (for me) is nothing more than all consuming.  emotions are high for both of us with too many dr. visits, shots, and pills.

i am so thankfull that in 6 hours – july will be no more.

and so to july – i say:  GOOD RIDDENS!

flowers on desk

here’s to august bringing better news, a wonderful vacation, and more relaxing times with each other!

iliana turned 8 this month.

it’s hard to believe that our baby dog is 8 years old.  it seems like just yesterday that we returned from our honeymoon at the Ihilani Hotel in Hawaii. ( http://www.ihilani.com/)  once we got back, we decided we wanted a play mate for amelia, and decided to get a new puppy.  we found an ad for toy rat terriers in the local paper and drove to md to have a look see.  once we got there we fell in love with the tiny little pup with the round belly.  she was definately the runt of the litter and we decided she’d have to be ours.  we packed her up and drove back to va with our new baby.  on the way home we tried to decide what we’d name her, and came up with a variation on the ihilani hotel – iliana.  and thus began the life of the dog that we now call any of the following:

iliana

illy

ii-wii-ahh-nahh

silly illy

lilly

lilly pond

lil sis

amelia fell in love with her right away.  they became the best of friends, just a lovin and a snugglin from the get go.  however, they were the tag team that made us send eligh (our former kitty cat) to cat camp (maw maw and paw paw’s house) and never return.  they tortured him and made him live a life of solitude on top of the washer/dryer in our tiny 1br apartment in fairfax, va.  they’ve grown up together, being only two years apart and always pal around the house together.  sure they have had their share of fights even resulting in broken teeth, scarred cheeks and ears, and many trips to the doggie er, but they love each other.

we wish our sweet lilly pond a Hau`oli La Hanau!

love,

mom and pops

this past weekend we headed to williamsburg for a little r&r.  we stayed at kings mill resort right outside of bg.  saturday morning we got up and headed to the park.  we managed to ride all of the roller coasters twice in the front row!  score!  we ate lunch at the bbq place, and that was some yummy stuff!  we decided to ride the roman rapids to cool down, but that did me in!  we were soaked!  we squish squashed our way back to the hotel and settled in for some relaxing!

after some hot showers and drowning in the covers at kings mill we decided to head over to the marina.  if you’ve never been, you should really check it out!  we thought we were just going to go for a drink by the water, but the weather, the music, the atmosphere was so perfect we did not want to leave our riverside table!  the marina is on the james river and has an amazing sunset view.  the marina was crowded with people listening to the music (very jimmy buffetesq) and just enjoying the view.  the hostess said it would be an hour before a table was ready, but before we could get our koolaids from the bar, the buzzer was going off and a table for two overlooking the water was ready!  we scurried on over and both looked at each other and said “we’re not moving until they make us move!”  we really had one of the most relaxing evenings we’ve had in 2009!  it’s always great to have the sound of the water, the breeze on sunburned skin, fresh seafood, great koolaid, good music, and your love bug at your side!

sunday morning we woke up and decided we’re too old for two days of bg back to back,  and resorted to breakfast in bed via room service.  doing this allowed us to stay snuggled up in the down comforter and our matching robes while we snoozed for our late checkout.  after checkout we went on the “good” coffee search, as we both decided two things this weekend – we are wine and coffee snobs.  now that we had that settled, we needed something besides folgers to be “the best part of wakin’ up” – off to starbucks we went.  while its not the BEST coffee, it would have to do.  one venti double chai tea latte and grande vanilla latte later and we were on our way.  we headed down to colonial williamsburg to meander down the streets until we had to head back to nc to pick up the doggies.  we saw some amazing garden layouts that we’d love to put into effect in our yard one day.

we definately had an amazing time on this quickie vacation getaway, and can’t wait for the bahamas in august!

i recently traveled to sml (smith mountain lake) to visit the roanoke fam for the holiday.  will had to work (finishing up yet), so it was just me on a solo adventure.  the car ride was pretty uneventful, which is always pleasant.

mom and i met dad at fork in the city, a new restaurant in downtown roanoke, for lunch on friday.  we really had some great food and fun in the sun on the patio that day!  that night i cooked us up some amazing food on the grill.

dad was feeling under the weather, and we’ve all sorta had a funkus since coming back from disney, so we resorted to the “netti pot”.  dad was terrified of the thing, but ended up liking it after he gave it a whirl.  it really does work, so give it a shot if you have not tried it out!

saturday, we all loaded in the car and headed to sml.  the weather was amazingly perfect and we all enjoyed ourselves on my uncle’s new boat dock.  after a day of fun in the sun we headed back into roanoke to view the fireworks in downtown roanoke.  we were totally exhausted and went to bed after getting back to mom and dad’s.

sunday we went out to look at new homes for mom and dad, and of course it poured down rain.  its always fun to get into the car, out of the car, into the car, out of the car, into the car, out of the car, in the pouring down rain.  however, the prices are readjusting themselves, so it was good to go see what you can get for the $ these days.  after the home tour we finished up the weekend with a visit to the barrel (cracker, that is).  the place was packed, due to the holiday weekend, but we secured a table and dove into some delicious eats.

all in all, we had a great weekend!

a super huge thanks to the best parents in the world for supplying my sisters and i with 31 years of fun family vacations.  we have toured the majority of the us and always have a blast thanks to them!

the taylor side + granny covey recently all met up in orlando for a fun filled week of swimming, sunning, and amusement parking!  we all had a blast.  the furthest travelers were keek and lo, coming all the way from chi town.  others came in from va, and me from nc.  we met up on sunday and spent the week at a rental house in kissimmee.

upon arrival we had to get our keys to the rental house and pick up our rental cars.  the first photo in the group is of what we like to call – the hooptie.  why the fog you ask, its all smoke and mirrors – baby.  this car provided us with hours of hysterical entertainment.  you can just imagine.

our first day was a fun filled day of lounging in the pool and vigorously applying sunscreen, so we did not get sunburned – well, just not yet.  monday rolled around and we headed out to universal orlando.  several of us received free universal park tickets during mom’s urgent pleas to submit an online form during the super bowl half time show.  it was amazing that over half of us actually got the free tickets.  once we got through the gates we welcomed james to a wonderful world of florida heat and amusement park life.  he’d let you know he’d been to amusement parks before, but none like this, and none in fl, and none with this group!  we all rode on shrek (a 3-d ride) et, and the terminator.  it was funny to hear mom laughing and granny making sure that james could see what she saw as the movie rolled through.  everyone enjoyed those “rides”.  we split off for a while and some of us rode the simpsons and men in black.  james really enjoyed those rides!  we later met back up with the rest of the group and all finished the day with soggy pants at jaws!  the heat was a bit much so we made our way back home to enjoy the rest of the evening in the swimming pool.

tuesday was another restful day of fun in the sun in the swimming pool at the house.  the house was amazing with 5 bedrooms, a game room, a movie theatre, and a great pool with a hot tub.  we all spread out and taught james how to dive, and had fun splashing around.  beth found out she got a new job, so we all had to share in a celebratory mimosa!  congrats bethy!

wednesday was our big day at disney.  (i try to be so prepared with my camera, battery, charger, etc.  however, on the biggest day of the trip i accidentally left the battery in the charger – plugged into the wall at the rental house!  so, all disney photos will have to come to you via tommy t’s surrogate camera.)  we all had an amazing time at disney thanks to d’s brother parker!  parker hooked james up with a jedi training camp and a back stage meetand greet with the star wars cast!  he and paw-paw were amazed at his jedi training skills and his autographed light sabor!  awesome times!  after riding the star wars ride, we headed across the camp to let james play on the “honey i shrunk the kids” playground.  he had a great time running around the movie set!  after this we headed to the rockin’ roller coaster.  the wait was long, and in the hot fl sun, but we all had a fun time in this 0-60 mph coaster!  james and paw-paw rode in the front car!  brave soldiers!  lori and i brought up the rear, riding right behind them.  after this we headed over to the magic kingdom.  james picked out an awesome mickey hat that brought us good luck for the rest of the afternoon!  he even saved off a thunderstorm.  james and beth rode the race car track, and we all had a spin on the tea cups.  then james, lori, granny, and i rode on dumbo before heading to “its a small world”.  after this we split up again and granny and mom went on the river boat cruise, while paw-paw, lori, beth, james, and i went on the haunted house tour.  lori had never made it through this spooky ride before, so she was anxious to get this one checked off!  soon it was time for the disney magic of lights parade, so we all settled in and watched the show.  granny and james sat in awe as they watched the hour long parade.  after this, lori, james and i headed back out for some more rides, while the others headed for the gates.  lori, james, and i went to the “big thunder mountain railroad”.  the line was short and we, again plopped james in the front car for this ride!  after the ride we got to watch the fireworks from atop the mountain!  they were amazing!  our last ride of the day was “splash mountain”.  we all three had a blast on this ride, despite the long line!  it was totally worth it, and as james said “i think our boat went off the tracks on this one!”  too cute!  as we were leaving we made sure james had a walk through of cinderella’s castle before heading to the monorail.  surprisingly he did not fall asleep until after we got home!  i thought for sure he’d be sleeping as soon as he hit the back seat of the car!

thursday was another sunny fun day at the pool.  we all have gorgeous tans to prove it.

friday was our last brave day at the amusement parks.  lori, keek, james, and i headed back to islands of adventure and finished up the missed rides from monday at universal.  james really enjoyed the “hulk” roller coaster, and keeping up with uncle keek all day long.  two peas in a pod!  james was afraid for his life on the “twister” show at universal, but he hung in there and survived the storm!  after this, we put him on the “mummy” coaster.  he told uncle keek that he kept his eyes closed the entire time!  we all had a blast, and met up with the rest of the family for dinner at granny’s favorite – red lobster.  after dinner the boys headed over to play mini-golf and the ladies went back to the house to settle into the hot tub!

beth and james’ flight out was saturday morning, so we all said our sad goodbyes and wished them a safe trip back home – promising we’d do something just as fun next year!  shortly thereafter, granny came inside saying that jesus was in the sky!  we all worried that she was being called by the light, but later found out that what was really happening was some sky writing.  nifty!  that afternoon mike and meg (keek’s cousins) came over to swim in the pool with us.  we all had a blast, and even rocco got in the pool!  that night we had to get dad over to pat o’brien’s piano bar at universal.  we made sure “great balls of fire” was on the list, and everyone sung their hearts out that night!

the word is that next year we’ll be doing a cruise.  get out the sunblock, and i promise to not forget my camera battery!

i’ve been a bad bad blogger lately.  it’s not that there is nothing to blog about, because believe me i have something to say.

excuse = work & too much of it.  do more work with less people – a sign of the times, but sometimes its rough.  definitely grateful to have a job, and my job – i love – just leaves no room for blogging it up sometimes. i digress.

here is the skinny on what has been going on in WF lately.

i have been out of town a lot recently, but the last trip i took was to richmond/newport news for d’s baby shower!  we had a great time at the shower and really got to spend some quality time together, just catching up!  it was so great to see her!  saturday night we went to the smithfield inn for dinner, this is where paula deen stays when she comes to town.  i had some she crab soup in honor of husband.  sunday we drove out to her family’s farm and enjoyed listening to the rain on the roof top.  (below are some photos of the onesies i made for the shower.)

most recently we celebrated memorial day – like the rest of the US – and for our long weekend we went to Charlotte.  i had always wanted to take husband to the Cajun Queen in Charlotte, and of course we needed to go see this brand spankin new Ikea!  we made the trip down, splashing around in the sprinkling rain and found some great items.  the favorite item of all of the purchases is a “pet light bulb”.  you have to ask husband about this, as it does not even live here – it’s at husband’s new office space on wilmington st.  after Ikea, we went to Cajun Queen.  husband really enjoyed the C-A-J-U-N experience!

the next day we headed over to Kathy’s house for a little goofing off.  Kathy and I kicked major bootie in Wii bowling, and I have photos of the scores to proove it!  my favorite picture of that night is hiding below.  bet you can’t guess which one it is.

we also recently went to locopops, which is a sort of specialty popsicle store.  we did not know there was one in raleigh, so we drove out to durham.  we drove right past the place and had to turn around to get in there and get our popsicles.  i had a strawberry balsamic popsicle and it was unbelievable!

nothing says summer to me like watermelon.  if you know me, this probably seems pretty funny.  i spent countless summer’s at granny and gran-gran’s lake house totally avoiding the stuff.  everyone would gather round after they filled their bellies with hot dogs and hamburgers and clammer for their portion of a large watermelon.  my main complaint with the watermelon used to be that i did not care for the texture of it.  love anything watermelon flavor, and the smell of it is amazing.  its only lately that i have really fallen in love with it.  however, even though i never really loved it like i do now, it has always made me think of those sticky summers at the lake.

this past weekend we went o the zac brown band concert in down town raleigh at the lincoln theatre.  the concert was held in the street in front of the theatre.  they had some really good opening acts and the band was amazing!  they really have an awesome group of talented people in this band, and if you have never heard them, you need to go to their website – www.zacbrownband.com – (warning – this is COUNTRY!)

most of you already know by now that amelia just had emergency surgery yesterday.  i was diligently working on tuesday when i heard her scampering up and down the hall way – clickity clack – clickity clack – go her totally overgrown fingernails on the hardwood floor.  it seemed odd, because usually if she wants anything she comes to my chair and whines until i look down and acknowledge her.  i spun around in my chair and went to see what was going on.  i came out into the hall to find a huge (x-rated, so get ready) poopie mess!  i knew it was amelia, just like a mother knows which child has done something wrong, and went to go get something to clean it up.  after the clean up, i grabbed up both dogs and told them we needed to go out for potty.  we headed out and both went for regular pit stops.  i brought them back in and noticed that amelia wanted to do some scooting.  i told her that i would help her out and went to get some (x rated again, prepare yourself) tissue to wipe up after her.  however, she was bleeding everywhere!  i freaked out and thought for sure this was the end of her precious little life.  i quickly ran in to get the phone and call husband.  drat!  he was leaving a smaller carbon foot print and rode the bus down town that day, so there was no way he could get home any faster.  i called the vet and they told me to come right away.  i coerced illy into her crate and put amelia in a blankie and headed out to the car.  i drove like a bat out of he** and went about 90MPH to the vet.  we got there and they took her straight away.  the doctor cleaned her up a bit and showed me the problem.  a gland had become impacted and ruptured (x rated again, prepare yourself) through her skin and fur!  OH MAN!  my little baby had part of her insides on her outside!  they took her back and said they would sedate her, and give her antibiotic shot after they cleaned out the impacted gland.  they kept her for a few hours before closing and wanted her back the next day for surgery.  she had the surgery and did very well.  the dr. said that the impacting was caused by a bacterial infection, and that hopefully once her inner stitches heal, and her outer stitches are removed in 2 weeks, she will be as good as new.

Two weeks ago we packed the car and headed north east to Williamsburg, VA with Kathy and Mark.  We all had a fantastic time riding coasters, playing mini-golf, and indulging on ice cream sundaes!  Will and I had not been to an amusement park in almost a decade, and really needed some amusing!

Below are the photographic highlights of the adventure!

it was will’s birthday this saturday.  i was super excited to reveal all of the secrets i had been keeping about his presents for the past month.  (we are not very good at keeping secrets in this house.)  he had to work late for maintenance weekend on friday, so i saved the great cake bake off for friday night.  he requested a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting.  knowing nothing but the best would do – i reverted to ina garten’s double chocolate espresso cake recipe, with her recipe for cream cheese frosting from another cake.  i am not a baker, however i can make a pretty mean cake.  i tied on my apron strings and began measuring and adding all items to the mixer.  everything was coming together wonderfully.  i got the cakes in the oven and will called.  he’d be home early!  great!  but, not great!  the cakes were still baking, so there is no way they’d be decorated by the time he got home.  he was very forgiving and gave me a back rub as i finally piped the last star on to the cake around 11pm.

will woke up early on saturday, eager to start the festivities.  i headed towards the kitchen to make the requested french toast.  i put a spin on it and stuffed the french toast with a mixture of ricotta cheese, orange zest, honey, vanilla, and nutmeg.  the french toast was then drizzled in a syrup made of blood oranges, cara cara oranges, maple syrup, and cointreau.  if that was not decadent enough, i drizzled the entire thing in chocolate!  for cocktails we had an orange zinger made with orange juice, perrier, and cointreau.  will declared it was the best breakfast ever!

after breakfast we headed out on to the screened in porch to open packages!  finally, the moment we’d both been waiting for.  i got to reveal the secrets i’d been hiding!  voila – ROCKBAND for the wii and a trip to BUSCH GARDENS!  will was super excited about all of his gifties!

after present time we headed out for a bit to enjoy the nice weather.  we went to an antique garden store, and headed down town to logan’s garden center to get some pots for our herb garden.  after a jaunt around town, and learning how much we do not like the oppressive 92 degree heat we decided to head back home and test out our rock-n-roll skills.

we jammed out for a few hours before we headed out to fins for a fantastic seafood dinner.  will was in love with the tuna sashimi, his grouper with chorizo, and his wildhorse pinot noir.  i also could not get enough of the beef mataki and my red snapper (thai style)!  dinner was faboo!  the place was ultra modern with lavish lighting fixtures and a water wall that stretched the length of the bar.  it was a fantastic evening.

after we returned home we tried out some of that fabulous cake, although we were so stuffed we could only eat a bite!  it was amazing (yeah!) and we’ll definately be eating cake for weeks!

today we headed to greensboro to meet up with mom and dad.  they were dying to catch up with us and ensure that i was wholly intact from my india trip.  we met up with them at print works bistro at the proximity hotel.  this place is faboo!  it’s the only certified LEED platinum restaurant in the US.  (this means it is one of the most energy efficient buildings and restaruants in the us)  the place was so french bistro, and ultra chic.  we really enjoyed catching up with mom and dad.  they had great stories from their two week stint in vegas, and we got to fill them in on all of my trials in india.  after lunch we headed out to the patio and lounged in the comfy sofas so i could pass out their india souvenirs.

will says he had a great weekend, and he is just sad it’s over!  (at least BUSCH GARDENS is next weekend!)

Tears.  Tears streaming down.  “Delta welcomes you to Hartsfield Jackson Airport in Atlanta.”  You never know how “proud to be an American” you could be, until you see the other side of the world.  Flying into the US you view America, draped in a blanket of greenery – grass, trees, and plants with pockets of sparkling water.  The air seems fresher and lighter, with less humidity.  Although you view everything from a distance, you feel safe, feel calm, and feel at home.

This story, as you’ve noticed – begins at the end.  Now let me start over.  I left Raleigh, NC at 3:30pm April 11th eastward bound for Mumbai, India.  Intimidated – no doubt.  Worried to leave the US alone – no doubt.  Afraid of what I would find – no doubt.  I got to the Atlanta Airport roughly an hour after leaving Raleigh.  Upon arrival my mission was to find a cellular phone that I could rent to use while in India.  However, once I arrived and went to the kiosk, I was told there were no phones to rent while in India in this airport.  Information desk confirmed – no phones.  Panic set in.  I frantically called home; Will was outside mowing the lawn.  I tried Beth, certainly she could help!  She answered, yes!  She was out shopping and did not have access to the internet to solve this one.  I called my parents; they were living it up in Vegas – no answer.  Now I am really about to have a nervous breakdown.  What are you going to do with no line of communication back to the US?  You can not call anyone to alert them to any issues.  What if something happens?  Moments later, I get a call back.  It was the parents.  They called Verizon and found out I could dial the magical code that would reset my cellular phone to receive international access.  A charge of $2 a minute and .50 cents per text was all you had to worry about.  No price was too unreasonable at this moment.  Crisis averted.  After I calmed down I decided I better have dinner while I waited for the plane to board for India.  I saw hundreds of people with Starbucks cups, and I knew I had to have a Dirty Iced Chai Tea Latte.  I went on a mission.  Husband checked and found that there was a Starbucks at gate 14 in Terminal E.  I was at gate 36.  I charged off, lugging my carryons and headed for 14.  Reaching an intersection, I found that 14 was down a separate hallway – a long vast hallway that seemingly never ended.  Knowing I had to have this drink, I decided to make the trek.  I reached the end of the long hallway, shoulder numb from the pain of the very uncomfortable laptop bag strap that was being pressed into my shoulder by the weight of the backpack I had on my back, to find there was no Starbucks.  No sign of a Starbucks anywhere.  Oh good grief!  So, I went back to the intersection of the E terminal to the food court.  Caribou would have to do.  I ordered my drink, and it was crap – as suspected.  I also ordered a roast beef sandwich from Arby’s, knowing there would be no more beef on this excursion.  I took the items back to the waiting area by the gate to wait for boarding of the 777.  Upon settling at the waiting area I noticed that I was the only person with brown hair waiting in the area.  Everyone else knew where they were going, had probably been there before, and were most likely going home.  They were comfortable, ready to fly, and seemed to have no hesitation in stepping on the plane.  Boarding began.  Zones were called and all passengers slowly lined up to feed through the ticket line.  Passports and visas were double checked.  Zone 9.  “Delta would like to welcome all passengers in zones 1 – 9 to continue boarding at this time.”  I am zone 9.  Hanging up the cell phone, I knew the miracle code better work once I arrived in Mumbai, or this was my last call to the US for the next 8 days.  I boarded the plane.

I got to my seat and the fellow that would be sitting beside me for the next 16 hours offered assistance in getting my laptop bag into the overhead bin.  Nice, and unexpected.  I sat down in my seat, and said some prayers about the journey that I was about to embark upon.  Thinking we would be taking off shortly, I buckled my seatbelt and tried to prepare for the long flight ahead.  However, after an hour of waiting, the crew came over the loudspeaker to confirm they had an issue with no water on the plane, and that it was being added at this time.  Since water is essential to flush toilets and wash hands, everyone agreed this was essential and we should not leave without it.  Finally, after an hour and a half on the plane we were cleared for take off.  Prayers were said again for peace, understanding, wisdom, patience, the safety of everyone on this plane, and for Saturday the 18th to come as soon as it possibly could.

The first 4 hours of the flight were easy.  A movie watching marathon had begun in the headrest in front of me.  Slumdog Millionaire was on the list.  I had no idea how close to reality this movie could actually be.  That movie was followed up by another movie, and then dinner was served.  It was at this point that boredom began to set in.  People began sleeping.  Lights went off, movie screens went dark, and blankets covered all passengers.  The movie marathon continued and went for another 6 hours before breakfast was served.  From this point there was a ton of tossing and turning, and never being able to be comfortable in the 3”x3” confinement that I had been placed.  India could not come fast enough.  I watched the flight path of the plane on the “My flight” assistance tracker, and viewed our progress as we passed over Iceland (Hey – we need shoppers here, what if we just stopover and I can pass out some flyers – no – okay, let’s keep going then.)  Continuing on we jet over Krakow, Poland – flying over all of these places, just wondering if you’ll ever get the chance to see this for yourself.  Up close, in person.  It was at this point that I watched 4 TV shows.  I, for once in my life became sick of movies, sick of TV, and turned to a book.  After reading 67 pages of “The Shack”, I finally dozed off.  I believe I slept peacefully for about 20 minutes.  At this point we were then jolted to a state of awareness by all lights being turned on and lunch being served.  It was only 2 more hours to Mumbai.  The last leg of the flight seemed to go slowly, as nervousness and shock that this was all really happening began to set in.  The plane landed, and it was announced – “Welcome to Mumbai”.

All issues confirmed – no doubt.

I stepped off the plane and was greeted by heat and humidity.  All passengers that were on the plane were herded into customs and waited in line as we filled out forms and were informed which lanes we needed to be in, and whose forms were properly filled out, and whose were not.  This section of the airport was dark and appeared to be under construction.  There was no air-conditioning.  After my second attempt at filling out the paperwork, I was allowed through immigration.  It was at this point where we needed to collect our bags.  I headed through a gate and the people in front of me were showing their passports, so I pulled out my passport as well.  The guard, dressed from head to toe in a khaki badged up uniform, asked for some slip of paper.  I had no idea what he was referring to.  I went digging through the passport and found a tiny slip of paper, where I was declaring nothing, and showed this to the officer.  He confirmed this was good and let me pass through.  I made it to the baggage claim.  I waited as bags, hundreds of bags, went past me on the conveyer.  My bag was not coming.  I just knew it, why did I never listen and not put an extra change of clothes, some medicine etc. in my carryon in case my bag was still sitting at ATL?  After 25 minutes of waiting, my bag finally made it on to the conveyer and I was able to leave the airport.  I made the trek towards the exit signs.  I was met with two more guards taking the slips of paper that were previously coveted by the other khaki guards.  I whipped it out and began to hand it over and march on my way.  However, the guard called out and told me I must fill out the slip with the requested information.  I propped all of my luggage against the wall and dug for a pen.  I filled out the paper work and submitted the slip.  I was permitted to leave.  Passing through I saw a few men holding signs with passenger names.  I was hoping this was not the only place these drivers would be standing, because nobody was holding one for me.  As promised by the India office, I was told I would have someone waiting to pick me up at the airport.  However, nobody said when or where…  I walked towards the exit door to leave the airport.  Still no driver.  I exited the building and was met by thousands of individuals holding signs and heckling to get passengers in their cars, taxis, vans, and rickshaws.  The air was hotter and even more humid than it had been inside the airport.  The masses of people were impenetrable and the volume of noise was overwhelming.  As I made my way down the line I spotted a man in a light blue uniform, wearing a blue hat, holding a sign that read “Sea Princess welcomes Ms. Adrianne Taylor”.  I locked eyes with this fellow and darted towards him.  I confirmed that I was she, and she was ready to go!  He asked me to follow him.  He was on one side of a gated area, and I was on the other.  I tried to keep my eyes on his hat as he skirted along the outside of the densely populated sidewalk.  Finally we reached the end of the line and met up.  He led me the rest of the way to the parking garage.  Upon arrival at the parking garage he did his best to inform me that he wanted me to wait “right here” by myself “for three minutes” and he would “be right back”.  I immediately pulled out my cell phone to call home.  I called Will and informed him that I was here, I had arrived, and I was waiting unattended in a Chicago style parking garage for the driver to go upstairs and get the car and pick me up.  He stayed on the phone with me until the driver arrived.  The line to get out of the garage was thousands of cars long.  It never ceased.  He opened the hatch, put in the luggage, and opened my door.  We climbed in and we were on our way through the masses.

Upon exiting the garage, I was aware of the multitudes of people leaving the airport at this hour.  All cars were cramming onto a 1.5 car capacity lane bridge to leave the airport, but they were piled three cars across.  Mirrors were sometimes folded in, so as to not scrape other passing cars.  Upon reaching the crest of the hill of the bridge I noticed a group of 5 guys pushing a car up to the top of the hill, once they reached the top of the hill all 5 of the guys hopped into the back of the car and the car was then able to drive the rest of the way out of the airport.  People had said there were dogs running all over India.  I never thought I would see one at the airport, but I did.  After leaving the airport we headed into town.  We passed dark areas filled with large trees covered in green draped leaves.  After making a few turns we headed down a street which was lined with people sleeping.  People were sleeping on the sidewalk, on busses, in cars, and in the road.  Men, women, and children were walking in the streets.  Buildings were dark, dusty, and appeared abandoned.  I knew I had no idea what I had gotten myself into.  After a half an hour drive we arrived at the hotel.  The hotel was brightly lit with a marble drive and stairs up to the attended glass doors.  The lobby was filled with a fountain and a crystal chandelier.  Uniformed attendants waited at the receptionist desks to check me in.  Once checked in I took my key and made my way, with a bellman to my room.  He opened the door and inserted the key card into a chamber in the wall.  (I later found out this was the master power for the entire room, and that if you pull the key out of the chamber you will loose all power in the room.)  The room was hot, but clean.  The bed was white, curtains purple silk, carpet a dark shade of blue and purple, and the bathroom had a magnificent shower.  Feelings of overwhelming aloneness settled in once I reached the room and figured out that the power converter I had been given would not work in the hotel.  How would I charge my phone?  How was I going to Skype with Will each evening?  Again – back to the fear of no communication with the US sent me into panic mode.  I called Will and he talked me out of catching the next flight back home.  I cried and wandered around my room, wondering why I had ever said yes to doing this in the first place.  Knowing, I would probably never do it again – if asked.  I unpacked what I needed for Monday and called it a night, it was 1:30am.

The alarm went off at 6:30am announcing it was time to get up and prepare for the next round of unexpected events that would unfold when someone came to pick me up at 9am.  I got ready and called home again.  A pep talk got me into the tackle mode knowing that I would be able to handle this situation and everything would be okay.  More prayers were handed out as I waited for a call from the hotel to confirm that my taxi had arrived.  I reached the lobby and was greeted by Cheryl.  She was friendly and quickly informed me that our taxi would be here and we would then take a 10 minute ride across town to the office.  We briefly chatted and discussed some of the things we were passing as we made our way to the office.  Not knowing where we were going, or what we were about to see, made me nervous and unable to process what I was seeing through the car’s windows.  Everything passed by in a blur.  We arrived at the office and made our way through a gate, down a courtyard, and up an elevator.  We reached the second floor and went through a glass door with the company logo.  Cheryl showed me to the conference room and told me I could set up here.  I showed her the converter and she confirmed that she could not get it to work, but she would get the assistant to get me a different one.  He headed out and quickly returned with a different converter to get the laptop up and running.  I quietly sat in the conference room until I was greeted by the new GM of the office Nishith.  He asked for the agenda of the week (which I was told by the US office that I did not have one…) and I explained the goals of the week and where I wanted to start.  He obliged and I began introducing myself to all of the account executives letting them know that I wanted to get an idea of what accounts they handled and what knowledge they had of all of our companies systems and tools.  I spent the next three days sitting with every employee of the company, going over their roles, work load, and usage of all systems.  I had extensive conversations with Nishith and his visions for the company, his team, and his own job.  The last two days in the office were spent offering training sessions, help with recruitment, and suggestions for ways to streamline processes.

The rides too and from the hotel quickly became my only excursions into India.  The area right outside of the hotel was filled with people, shops, traffic, and noise.  I had no idea who could speak English, how they would react to me, or where/what I should be doing, so I chose to never leave unattended.  By Wednesday I gathered up enough courage to begin taking videos of my daily treks to the office.  The assistant would come and pick me up each morning and escort me by taxi to and from the office.  Thank God for this!  The trips were eventful and eye opening.  The streets were bumpy and mostly unpaved.  Loads of construction appeared to have been started, but was never being worked on while I was in the area.  There were huge holes in the street, upwards of 8” deep by 5” across that left wires and plumbing exposed.  The unearthed rubble sat in a pile on the road next to the hole.  The holes were everywhere.  Roads were covered with traffic.  Traffic consisted of people on foot, rickshaws, taxis, cars, busses, bikes, and trucks.  There were no lanes on the road, and all traffic appeared to go in multiple directions at any given time.  However, I never saw an accident.  Horn tapping is popular.  Horn tapping could announce any of the following:  I am behind you, I am in front of you, I am getting ready to cross the road, I am in a hurry, Why don’t you move, Don’t step/pull out in front of me, Your car is too big and you are in my way etc.

Tuesday evening Nishith met me for dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.  We met for dinner and I was introduced to new Indian customs to which I had never experienced.  Cocktails are ordered and completely consumed before moving on to the next course.  Buffets are served by an attendant who will gather up your selections for you and prepare your plate.  Servers are spoken down to and no sugar coating is offered if you are not providing adequate services to the patrons.  The meal was good; however it was not full of traditional Indian fare as I had hoped it would be.  Offerings such as “Continental Fare” were not what I was looking for after traveling 9000 miles to come to India.  Earlier meals in the office for lunch were from McDonalds, and I was beginning to wonder if anyone ever ate traditional Indian food anymore.

Wednesday night Nishith offered to take me to the real Bombay and show me around town.  We headed to Juhu beach, right down from where my hotel was located.  There was a large busy area full of people, lights, and activity.  The entire event reminded me of the Salem Fair.  People were all crowded around food vendors, small sideshows, and tiny carnival rides.  Nishith informed me that the area was busy all of the time, even on a week night, but on the weekends, you would not be able to move around so freely because it would be so packed with people.  The food stands were all brightly lit and decorated with signs and flowers.  Vendors would holler out as you passed and try to entice you into their booth.  All booths appeared to be offering similar types of food, things like you would normally see at carnivals/fairs, which in the US probably equivalent to funnel cakes and corn dogs.  After making our way through the crowds we headed down the beach, through the madness to more vendors selling roasted corn, bags of berries, ice cream, puris, and the ever popular cotton candy.  Nishith felt we needed to get some berries and he conversed with the fellow who had a table full of assorted berries to determine which berries I should eat.  Knowing that I was told to “not eat street food” to avoid typhoid fever, fear again began to settle in.  How was I going to get out of this one?  The man quickly bagged up the berries with his bare hands (which I am sure he previously collected them with earlier in the day) and placed them in a tiny bag he had prepared out of pre-read magazine pages.  Very green indeed.  We picked up our bags of berries and headed down the beach towards the JW Marriott.  Nishith confirmed that it was the elusive hotel where all rich and famous people stayed when they came to Mumbai.  It was gated and guarded by the beach and on the street.  We turned to head back to the food court area.  I asked if anyone swam in the ocean, and he informed me that the ocean was not for swimming, and that the under current was too strong, and that the primary fun at the beach was just walking along the sand.  Upon reaching the food court area Nishith suggested we try a snack.  He picked a booth and asked me to have a seat at a low bench on the front of the counter.  I sat and waited for something to be prepared.  I watched as the man behind the counter took items from several places to come up with a mix of a dish of which I could not identify any of the parts.  He placed it in front of me and everyone gathered to see how I would like it.  The food was not bad, but the fear of Tommy’s foodie background made me cringe on every swallow.  I watched the men clean the used plates and silverware as I was eating.  It was one fellow’s job to take the “dirty” plates and silverware and “wipe” them with a rag before placing them back into the “clean” pile.  I could see Tommy’s blood pressure rising with every bite.  Finally, we had finished our plates of food when Nishith carried on another conversation with the man behind the counter and confirmed they were fixing something special for me.  Again, I had no idea what was coming.  A second plate appeared with an artful little display of puri covered in a yogurt sauce, cilantro, and some other unknown ingredients.  I took the first bite and as I crunched the puri, the yogurt sauce splashed out into my mouth.  Again, I witnessed flashes of Tommy and my doctor standing there asking me why I was eating from a street vendor!  Avoiding certain stomach upset I announced, when asked, that this dish was not my favorite and wormed my way out of eating any more.  We headed out of the food market area.  Upon leaving I saw a man sitting on the ground weaving golden colored wires into bikes, puzzles, and key chains.  I asked Nishith if we could stop so I could purchase a souvenir.  The man attempted to show us how to work the puzzles, but we could not make them work.  It was a golf tee/wooden peg flash back type moment from puzzle games at Cracker Barrel.  “Complete Ignoramus.”  I found two key chains and we were on our way.  Nishith confirmed we would go have some more “sanitarily” prepared food.

We headed downtown and viewed larger buildings and intersections with stoplights.  The traffic was heavy and solid into the area.  We arrived at a large high-rise and valeted the car.  Upon entry to the building Nishith was wanded down with a security device and we were allowed to take the elevator up to the third floor.  We arrived on the floor and were greeted by a host station.  We were then taken in, and I found out we were entering a night club – not a restaurant.  Gulp.  The music was loud and the décor reminiscent of Apple Bees.  Unbenounced to me, Nishith was meeting some friends.  The other three gentlemen quickly greeted me and we ordered a drink and found a table.  They chatted together in attempts to get one of the friends, who had just returned from Dubai, to open his own business in Mumbai.  He had left his job and needed to find work.  The evening was consumed with beer, conversation in another language, and watching people dance to western songs.  Oddly enough Jason Mraz, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Cyndi Lauper were all in the hit list.  We left the club around midnight and they dropped me off back at the hotel.

Thursday night I decided to be adventurous and make my way down to the Marriott by taxi.  I went to the front door of the hotel and requested a taxi.  One was called over and I informed the driver where I was headed.  He confirmed he would be charging 100 rupees for the trip.  I agreed that was fine, and we were on the way.  The drive was short and we arrived at the gated entrance of the hotel.  All cars were checked under the hood and in the trunk.  Once approved, drivers could then take passengers up to the main door.  I was dropped off and headed into the Marriott in search of the great buffet.  Cedric and “The Lonely Traveler” confirmed they had the best Indian buffet in Mumbai.  I walked to the edge of the balcony which overlooked a sea of tables and a buffet.  I was sure I was in the right place.  I made my way down a marble staircase and was greeted by the hostess.  The buffet was large and intimidating.  When we made it to my seat she confirmed that the buffet was having a special and would be 777 Rupees.  When my waiter came I decided I would be having the buffet and asked for a tour.  He gladly obliged and showed me the offerings.  The buffet was set up in stations.  There was a candy station, ice cream station, pizza station, salad station, soup station, veg Indian station, non-veg Indian station, a bread station, a Peking station, and a dessert station.  I gathered my plate and began with salads.  After an extensive array of salads was consumed I made my way back to the buffet for some traditional Indian fare.  I was excited that I was able to freely eat anything in the buffet without fear of Tommy and the doctor checking in.  I finished up my dinner with an amazing little basil mango torte.  This was an amazing treat!    After eating I made my way back upstairs to look for any retail stores in the hotel.  I found three stores, but all were filled with western items, and not really what I was looking for in terms of souvenirs etc.  I made my way back to my hotel by taxi.

Friday after work several girls in the office offered to take me out shopping for souvenirs before I had to catch my flight.  We left the office after a presentation of gifts and thank yous were given to me for my help in the office that week.  We departed the office for shopping in a Rickshaw – it was good I was getting this chance, since all previous travel was done via taxi.  All Rickshaw drivers wear the same uniform of khaki pants and a khaki button down shirt.  They also wear no shoes.  We arrived at the shopping area and went down the street into multiple retail stores.  The girls were able to do some bargaining for me, able to determine prices, and what was of good value.  Street vendors sold mountains of shoes, giraffe style Dooney & Burke pocket books, scarves, and other merchandise from make shift store fronts.  The streets were busy and full of shoppers.  I purchased as much as we could carry and was happy to have had the opportunity to shop with these girls.  They watched the time and made sure I was headed back towards the hotel around 7:15pm.  At this time they put me in a Rickshaw and sent me back to the hotel.  The Rickshaw driver first asked for 10 Rupees.  I obliged and gave him the 10 Rupees, as requested.  A little while later he asked for 100 Rupees.  I told him I would give him more Rupees once we arrived at the hotel – knowing that I had paid 100 Rupees for an air-conditioned taxi ride the night before.  He was insistent.  He never let up.  By the time we were half way there he was demanding 500 Rupees.  I reluctantly gave in and gave him the 500 Rupees.  (Knowing I should not have.)  We stopped at an intersection and a small boy came up to the Rickshaw asking for money.  He could not have been more than 3 or 4 years old.  I quickly dug into my pocket for 10 Rupees and sent him away.  Moments later his friends swarmed the Rickshaw demanding Rupees as well.  (I knew this would happen, but I could not leave this city without offering them something.)  I told them to have their friend share with them, and unfortunately the Rickshaw driver had taken all of my money at this point.  They were fascinated with the camera and one child attempted to take it on multiple occasions.  Luckily they understood I was sorry I could not offer them anything else and they left as the traffic picked back up.  We arrived at the hotel and the Rickshaw driver demanded 500 more Rupees.  I quickly exited the Rickshaw and walked towards the hotel, completely ignoring his request.  I knew this was way too much to pay for a Rickshaw ride, and if he needed something he could talk to the valet/bell man out front.  He left.

I entered the hotel and made my way back upstairs to gather all of my belongings to prepare for departure.  All souvenirs were packed and I made one last phone call home to announce I was on my way back home.  I went downstairs to check out and was then taken by the hotel car/driver back to the airport.  The drive was long, and the traffic was heavy.  It was after all, a Friday night.  People were crammed by the thousands at the carnival area I had been to several nights prior at Juhu beach.  Things passed by my windows as we headed for the airport.  I noticed a paper recycling store that was a store front that was filled from floor to ceiling with “recycled” papers for sale by the bulk.  Next door was a dry cleaners that processed all of the cleaning out in the open, in a sort of make shift process.  Beside this business was a small stand selling fruits.  People, dogs, and garbage lined the streets.  As we made our way closer to the airport I encountered a large 10 foot statue of Jesus on the cross.  This is something I did not think I would ever see in Mumbai, India.  However, I was thankful it was there, and we were almost at the airport.

Entering the airport I was greeted by guards asking for tickets and a passport.  Nobody is allowed in the airport without these items.  I passed through and was greeted by Delta.  They checked through my bags and sent me on to security.  I was checked through and found a coffee shop to spend the next few hours while I waited for my flight back to the US.  When time neared for boarding I headed down to the waiting area.  They called zones and we boarded accordingly.  After passing through the ticketing agent we were re-checked by security, and rewanded and patted down to check for any items on our persons.  Once we were processed we were able to make our way on to the plane and prepare for take off.

6 days after I arrived, I was heading back home.  In some ways this flight seemed longer than the first, and in other ways it was much shorter.  After all, I knew exactly what to expect when I arrived in ATL and even more so what to expect when I arrived in RDU.  I was overcome with feelings of sadness, thankfulness, gratefulness, and humility.  I knew that the experiences I had in Mumbai were completely reactionary and that I would most likely never know the real Mumbai.

Or had I already seen it?

Who could believe that Amelia – big sis – just turned 10 years old this past weekend?

It seems like just yesterday that we were at the SPCA in Harrisonburg attempting to find a puppy.  We went to the pound in search of a little pup.  We arrived and toured the entire facility and found a dog that was about four months old that we thought was pretty cute.  We took him outside and played with him for a bit, but I just did not feel right about him, so we went back in and took another look around.  It just so happened that a tiny little beagle pup had just been separated from her mom.  We saw this little sad beagle pup and fell in love – immediately!  We took her outside and played in the yard and knew she was the one for us!  We went back in to fill out the paper work and take her home.  However, to our young college naive selves, we were alarmed when they wanted to contact the apartment complex we were living in to make sure we could indeed, have a dog.  They said that until they reached someone to verify with, we would be unable to adopt a pet.  Another family swooped in and wanted to take our newly found pup away.  However, I sat and held her outside for 2 hours until the maintenance man at the complex could be reached to verify that we could have the dog.  Finally – it paid off and we got our pup!  TULIP!

I know, you are like – wait….  I thought this was a story about Amelia.  Funny thing here is that Amelia is the doggie formerly known as Tulip!  As soon as we left the parking lot her name was forever changed!

This sweet little girl still plays like a pup.  She loves the porch, its her favorite room “in the house”, and she loves the sunshine.

We held her 10th birthday party this weekend.  She and her guest, Iliana, feasted on plates set up like sushi trays with doggie cookies, doggie meat snacks, and dollops of peanut butter.  (And no, neither one of them wanted anything to do with a party hat.)  After the tasty party food Amelia opened her present.  She got a giant green lobster – with a squeaker inside!  She promptly took it, shook it, ran with it, chewed it, and would not let it out of her sight.  She told us before she went to bed on Saturday night that it was her best birthday ever.

God bless that little Mealboze.
